Getting the Word Out

Byline: Angelo Otterbein

We are often asked how other schools will share a new site launch in their print publications. I was impressed with how Haverford College recently designed a nice spread in their Winter 2012 Alumni Magazine.

While Haverford coordinated a re-launch of their entire site, our role was to design and develop a new alumni community to serve their 15,000 alums and re-imagine what an alumni website really need to do. Which is, of course, to keep it simple.

But even simple is hard, and as the Communications Office worked day and night to accomplish their job and we ours to hit a November deadline, we collectively (silently?) hoped that there’d be a mad rush to the website after all of that hard work. This is wishful thinking of course. Our evangelists and fans will mention and like, and we’ll get the users we expect to get. But all channels need to be covered, and the magazine is certainly one of them.

I liked how they pointed out a few key areas of the site; took nice screenshots; showed the site within a monitor, a phone and a tablet, and connected the dots of their social media channels. Great job!

Kudos to our neighbors, Haverford College – and to Silverpoint on the Haverford College Alumni site, as well! And to anyone interested, The Haverford School also featured our website redesign prominently in our alumni magazine this past winter. If you are interested, you can visit our publications page at http://www.haverford.org/publications/index.aspx and click on the winter issue (with three boys and an iPad on the cover).
